Yoga for Women: Seven Simple Self Care Steps To Overcome Stress and Relax
Posted by in Yoga on June 29, 2011
Be honest. Much as you enjoy life have you ever woken up, feeling jaded, tired and desperate to spend a little longer in bed? Your body aches and you don’t have the energy to wake up and get up?
In the back of your mind you know you have to get up yet the thought of facing your day makes you sigh and snuggle deeper into your duvet.
Maybe your eyes feel puffy, your nose bunged up, shoulders ache and you feel bloated and heavy. Perhaps your body is screaming out for you to stop, unwind and rest yet you ignore your aches and pains and carry on.
As a busy mum, three active teen daughters and running my business I often feel like this. And as my girls will tell you, I snap at them, get ratty, lose my calm and generally carry on like a drama queen. It isn’t funny. You love what you do. Get a buzz from running your own business and being in charge of your life, but lately it feels too much, you are too tired, too stressed and tired of running on auto-pilot?
As a business woman it is hard for you to find time to care for yourself.
Work, family commitments and social obligations are your first priority. Making time for you – to have a spot of Me-Time seems like a luxury.
Well, believe it or not, given the multitude of things you do, it is essential you find time during your day to care for and nurture yourself.
All of this running around takes it toll on your health.
When was the last time you cooked an evening meal and ate it with your family; at the dining table, undisturbed by the television, Facebook/twitter updates or text messages?
If this sounds like you, don’t’ worry. Stress relief is on its way.
You Matter
It Is Time To Stop Running Around After Everyone
You are your business. You matter. It is possible to cut the purse-strings and put your self first. It is possible to be self-ish and give your self a taste of the love, care and attention you so freely give to others, yet somehow fail to give to yourself. Read the rest of this entry »

“What’s So Great About Yoga Anyway?”
Women have asked me, with the most serious of expressions, “What is so great about Yoga anyways? It looks so dull-I mean women don’t even wear makeup or jewelry to class. Then you have to actually make an effort to get into those silly poses! Really, Jessica, what’s so great about dressing blah and straining myself to look like some big human pretzel?”
After pulling my foot from behind my ear, ok, more like my finger, and picking my jaw up off the floor, I take a deep breath in and contemplate all the best reasons why I Heart Yoga.
Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:
1.) Yoga is challenging to my body in a way that makes me feel alive! Each asana (pose) creates an opportunity to strengthen, tone or increase the flexibility of my muscles. And you should never feel like you’re straining in a pose. Always remember the practice of Ahimsa-nonviolence. That means allowing yourself to start where YOU are at with the poses-not trying to force your body to go as deeply into the poses as the person next to you.
2.) Yoga is challenging to my mind in a way that makes me feel more conscious and relaxed. As I focus on the movement from asana to asana, my mind is challenged to be quiet and still, with the biggest opportunity for this being the ending pose savasana (corpse/relaxation pose) and a closing meditation.
3.) Focusing on bringing more prana (breath), more life into the body increases vitality and reduces stress. Not to mention the juiciness of inner peace and the calm confidence that practicing meditation awards the faithful Yogini. You should feel energized yet relaxed after class.
4.) For me, Yoga = empowerment. I feel EMPOWERED on the mat. I feel connected: to my own body, to like-minded seekers, to my capital “S” Self, to the Divine that resides in us all.
5.) And if that’s not enough, the way you look in the mirror as your body becomes more toned and sculpted is great motivation to maintain a regular Yoga practice. Right?
6.) Altogether, Yoga challenges me at the core of my being to be more conscious, aware, and in tune, with the hopes that this elevated state of being will continue throughout my day. Plus it gives me new perspectives on life as I view it from right side up, upside down, sideways, and all!
7.) Yoga time is MY time-I can send the entire world out of my space and out of my head to enjoy this precious gift of self-care. Now that’s worth its weight in gold!
But don’t take my word for it–get out there to your local Yoga class and see why I and millions of others around the globe, proudly say “I HEART YOGA!”
